FYI- Fall Home Prep Tips

Fall is finally here! While the weather and scenery can be gorgeous, it can wreak havoc on your property if you let it get away from you. Deferred seasonal maintenance is one of the more common contributors to reduced property value and costly emergency repairs. A few hours of attention now can prevent thousands of dollars in damage later.
We have a quick checklist for homeowners to help them prepare their homes for the fall season.
- Drainage and water management. Clear gutters and downspouts completely, and confirm that water is being directed away from your foundation. Additionally, disconnect unused garden hoses and shut off exterior faucets to prevent pipe damage before freezing temperatures.
- Structural exterior checks. Inspect your roof for compromised shingles, and do a quick visual check of your home for any visible damage. Examine driveways, walkways, and steps for cracking. Cooler temps and more precipitation can exacerbate even small damage.
- Check window and door seals. Test windows and doors for air infiltration. Deteriorated caulking and weatherstripping are among the most commonly overlooked insulation issues that homeowners run into, and can be quickly and cost-effectively fixed with DIY solutions from a hardware store.
- Landscaping tasks. Trim branches that overhang the roofline, since these can pose a risk during fall storms. Also, regularly clear away any fallen leaves from gutters, HVAC units, and your lawn.
- Seasonal maintenance. Be sure to schedule any seasonal maintenance with your HVAC provider, plumber, or electrician. If you have a wood or gas burning fireplace and intend to use it as temperatures drop, plan to reach out to your service provider and inquire about any necessary seasonal maintenance.
