Whether your student is just starting college or already well into their academic career, insurance is one area worth revisiting periodically to ensure the right coverage is in place.
With the start of the school year just underway, let’s take a moment to share a few key coverages to review as students head back to school.
- Renters Insurance: If your student is renting off campus, their personal belongings, liability, and temporary housing needs are unprotected without renters insurance. Additionally, obtaining a renters insurance policy is often required by many landlords. These coverages are often relatively affordable.
- Homeowners Insurance: Students in campus housing may have limited personal property coverage under an existing homeowners policy, usually a percentage of the total personal property limit. However, it may be worth reviewing these limits as your student moves in to ensure their personal property is fully protected. If existing homeowners insurance won’t fully cover a student’s personal property, a personal property coverage extension might be necessary.
- Auto Insurance: It’s widely recommended that students who bring a car to college remain on their caretaker’s insurance, given how costly auto premiums can be for college-aged drivers. However, there are some discounts available for students, though these vary by policy and individual situation.
Taking time to review these key coverages can help give you and your student peace of mind. We’re here to help review your current coverage and talk through additional policies and coverage extensions where it makes sense. Give us a call anytime, 513-741-3244.
